Bark/hog fuel boilers produce energy for mills from material such as saw dust, bark and other organic material not suitable for making into paper. With this material being made by the mill, or purchased from outside sources, it comes in a wide variety of burn qualities. The unpredictable nature of hog fuels make it necessary to be able to monitor how the fuel is being fed onto the grates and what effect it has on combustion. A slug of wet organic material dramatically effects the furnaces temperature and consequently steam production.
Without having the ability to see into the boiler the operator does not know if steam production is down because of lack of fuel or wet fuel. Adding more fuel to the fire when the problem is wet fuel to begin with, risks an even further drop in steam production that could shut in the mill.
